Root canals become essential when a tooth’s pulp is infected, as untreated infection can lead to tooth loss. Root canal therapy, a generally comfortable procedure, not only preserves the natural tooth but also prevents infection spread, restoring complete oral health and a confident smile.
The Procedure :
– Prior to the procedure, the affected area is thoroughly numbed with a local anesthetic.
– A protective rubber dam is placed around the infected tooth to safeguard the mouth and prevent debris from entering the throat.
– To access the infected pulp, an opening is made at the top of the tooth, reaching the pulp chamber.
– A precise dental file is then used to meticulously remove the infected tissue and shape the root canals to prepare for a filling. X-rays may be taken to ensure thorough removal of infected pulp.
– After the infected pulp is eliminated, a restoration is applied. In most cases, a crown is used to fortify and shield the tooth. However, for severely damaged teeth, initial restoration may involve building up the tooth with a post and core.
